Blogs

Infertility can be a challenging journey for many couples, but understanding the available evaluation and treatment options can provide hope and direction. At May-Grant OB/GYN in Lancaster, PA, our team of experts is committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to couples facing infertility challenges. This blog explores the various aspects of infertility evaluation and treatment, aiming to empower you with knowledge and options.

Understanding Infertility

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. It affects both men and women and can result from a variety of causes. Understanding the root cause is crucial in determining the most effective treatment approach.

Initial Evaluation

The journey typically begins with a thorough evaluation which may include:

  • Medical History: Discussing both partners’ health history, lifestyle, and any previous fertility issues.
  • Physical Examination: A comprehensive physical exam for both partners.
  • Diagnostic Tests: These may include blood tests, ultrasound, semen analysis, and other specialized tests.

Treatment Options at May-Grant OB/GYN

1. Lifestyle Changes

Often, simple changes in diet, exercise, and stress management can improve fertility. Our team can provide guidance tailored to your specific needs.

2. Medication

Medications can be used to treat ovulatory disorders or hormonal imbalances. These are often the first line of treatment and can be quite effective.

3. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is a procedure where sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. It’s less invasive and more cost-effective than some other treatments.

4. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF involves fertilizing an egg outside the body and then transferring the embryo to the uterus. It’s often recommended when other treatments haven’t been successful.

5. Surgery

In some cases, surgical procedures can correct anatomical issues that contribute to infertility.

6. Third-Party Assisted Techniques

This includes donor eggs, donor sperm, and surrogacy, which can be options for couples facing specific types of infertility.
